How long should you keep records used in preparation of your federal tax return?

Here are the various scenarios for keeping records associated with your federal return.

3 years from the date you filed your return. Unless any of the following scenarios apply to you.

  • 6 years if you underreported income by more than 25%

  • Indefinitely if you not file a return

  • Indefinitely if you filed a fraudulent return
